How Mechanical Pocket Games Worked
Open a mechanical pocket game and there is startlingly little inside. That was the point: a handful of parts, no power, and a game that still works forty years later.
The case is the game board
Most units were two pieces of injection-moulded plastic welded or screwed together, with the maze walls, ramps and trap holes moulded straight into the base. The artwork was printed on card or applied as a label under a clear window, so the playfield you looked at and the playfield the ball ran on were the same surface.
That construction is why the games survive. There is nothing to wear out except the plastic itself.
Bearings, gravity and tilt
The moving part is usually a steel ball bearing. Gravity supplies the force, your wrists supply the steering, and the moulded walls supply the difficulty. Trap holes are cut just wide enough to swallow the ball on a bad line, which turns a simple route into a test of patience.
Springs, levers and ratchets
Games that needed an action rather than a tilt used a leaf or coil spring behind a button: press, load, release, and a lever flicks the ball. Rotating drums and counters were held by ratchets and detents — the little click you feel when a scoring wheel steps to the next number.
Magnets appear in some designs, holding pieces in place or steering a captive ball from outside the sealed playfield.
Translating mechanics to a phone
In the club's rebuilds the same behaviour is simulated: acceleration from tilt, friction against moulded walls, a bounce that loses energy, and a hole that only claims the ball when its centre crosses the rim. Where a real unit clicked and rattled, the phone plays a synthesised equivalent, generated in the browser rather than sampled.
